Adventure Rider Challenge 2011Sep 29, 2011
Hosted by our friends at RawHyde Adventures, this year's Adventure Rider Challenge was held in one of the most beautiful (and challenging) locations in North America, Moab, Utah.
Driving south from Seattle, the Touratech-USA Sprinter Van made its way through three states en route to this year's Adventure Rider Challenge. Upon arriving in Moab, Justin and Iain of Touratech-USA unloaded the fully equipped BMW F800GS they had brought and prepared for three days of trail riding and campfire camaraderie.
While the event didn't officially kicked off until Friday, a handful of riders arrived late Wednesday night, eager to get a feel for the terrain. And while there were no planned rides for Thursday, a number of people took off to ride some of the trails just a few miles outside of town.
Following breakfast Friday morning everyone gathered to discuss their options for the day. A number of people chose to ride Hell's Revenge, a trail that features petrified sand dunes, plenty of slickrock and numerous sandy wash outs.
While riding Hell's Revenge, Joe Lloyd of Curbsyde Productions had to be winched out of a hole he'd dug himself into after countless attempts to climb a rather sandy hill.
On Saturday, following lunch, nearly all of the participants headed to Cliff Hanger, a rather technical trail that crosses various sandstone layers creating difficult stair-step ledges.
While some found the Cliff Hanger trail difficult, no one was left behind. Here, Chris uses a WARN winch to descend a section of trail otherwise unrideable on a bike as big as the BMW R1200GS.
Upon returning to camp Saturday night, everyone gathered for drinks at the 'Dakar Bar.' After sharing stories from the weekend, the event wrapped up with a delicious steak dinner followed by a prize raffle.
The 2011 Adventure Rider Challenge featured both difficult terrain and spectacular scenery. The guys (and gals) from RawHyde Adventures did a wonderful job organizing the event and we at Touratech-USA would like to thank everyone that came out for this year's event. We look forward to riding with you in Moab next year!
