If you ride your 2008 & newer GS offroad, you NEED this part! A big low-slung engine, with no 'frame' protecting it requires the best protection you can get. Steel structure spreads the load between more mounting points and also places an 8mm thick impact absorbing rubber cushion between the engine and the rocks. This engine guard is essential for maximum protection for serious off-road adventures. It can be mounted with the OEM BMW skidplate but the best protection is obtained when used in counjunction with the TOURATECH skid plate 044-0722.
Very straightforward installation. The reinforcement is placed between the skidplate and the engine.
When used in extreme off-road conditions, NO engine guard can guarantee 100% protection of the large 1200cc engine. Adding a layer of steel-and-rubber between the impact and the engine offers a significant increase in strength. The R1200GS is low to the ground, and when combined with tire deflection, there is not much ground clearance remaining, at suspension bottom-out. This reinforcement adds a lot of protection to the engine casting, without sacrificing any (already minimal) ground clearance.
The impact-absorbing rubber is 8mm thick, bonded to a 3 mm thick stainless steel plate. It bolts directly to the front of the engine. In addition it prevents BMW's protective rubber mounts from shearing under impact.
