To remember which are charged and discharged, store ready batteries with "+ up" signifying "charged". Place them in the case with "+ down" when "discharged". This thing is pretty handy. When I'm out motorcycle camping I usually take a number of things that run on AA's (shortwave radio, ultraviolet light water purifier, headlamp, tent lantern etc.). When you're ransacking your panniers at night looking for loose batteries it's a pain, so having this little case in a side pocket saves a lot of unpacking and frustration.
