A sharp impact e.g. with a rock or stone may damage the side stand support, and in the worst case, parts of the frame. We have developed a fairly small item for sports use that is fitted to the underside of the footpeg holder as a "trailing surface" - which assists the sidestand bracket to glide over a rock, rather than cause damage;
simple but effective. Also highly recommended for safe long-distance traveling with heavy luggage, or when lowering the bike.
